Judge Brack: supsupsupsup?

Judge Brack was an interesting character in the play for many reasons. To me, he was a male version of Hedda (or maybe it was Hedda that was the female version of him, idk?) They were both manipulative towards one another and everyone else around them. I think Judge Brack represents the oppression and corruption that females are tryin to fight against in that time period. I find it ironic too that Brack's character had to be a Judge bcuz he was the most unfair and unjust in the play to me. Brack should've used his role as Judge to serve justice and righteousness to people around him. But instead, he used his authority for bad and to take advantage of anyone he wanted to.....what do u think?

My Poem I made up for Hedda Gabler: supsupsupsup!!!!!

POOR HEDDA
Poor Hedda, thirsty for control,
But what good is power if you lose your own soul?
Constantly fighting and always getting mad
Too busy to see what she already had.
Poor Hedda, thirsty for control,
But what good is power if you lose your soul?
Poor Hedda, thirsty for control,
Always digging yourself into a hole
Allowing you anger to get bigger and bigger
You always had a gun, but never pulled the trigger!
Poor Hedda, thirsty for control,
But what good is power if you lose your own soul?
Poor Hedda, so thirsty and broken
Trying to find the things that were stolen!
Always searching for something so deep,
But sadly it was something that you could never keep.
Poor Hedda, thirsty for control,
But what good is power if you lose your own soul?
Dear Hedda, desperate for meaningful life,
But always consumed by the trouble and strife
Before you could even take your last breath,
The only true power you had was through death.
Dear Hedda, thirsty for control,
But what good was power if you lost your own soul?

Hats: supsupsupsup?

When we discussed motifs and symbols in the play, alot of people brought up pistols and other things but the one motif that stood out to me was the hats. I think hats played a very important part in the play bcuz it showed the true personalities of certain characters in the play. Hats are usually associated with being a means of protection from the sun by acting as shade. Also, hats are used as accessories for an elegant outfit for a formal event....Aunt Julie used her hat to show that she was of the same social status as Hedda. She wanted Hedda to believe that she was on the same level as her bcuz Hedda tended to look down on other females around her. Unfortunately, Aunt Julie's pln didnt work bcuz not only did Hedda fail to see it as a "rich person's" hat, but she ended up mistaking it for the maid's ...which is even worse!!!!!! What other motifs did u guys notice?

Suicide: supsupsupsup? :(

When Hedda killed herself, I was really shocked! She entered the play with so much power and control over everyone and the only person who she saw as a threat was Judge Brack. Hedda was so clever when it came to manipulating others to get what she wanted. I find it ironic bcuz she had so much control over everyone else's minds but the one mind she could never control was her own. I think its bcuz Hedda was so focused on controlling everyone and evrything around her that she lost control of her own being. What do u guys think

Lorca vs. Ibsen: supsupsupsup?

As I read both House of Bernarda Alba by Lorca and Hedda Gabler by Ibsen, I couldnt help but notice alot of similarities between the 2 plays. For one, I noticed a theme of oppression and a power struggle between women and what society sees them as. The only difference is that the girls in House of Bernarda Alba were a bit reserved in their approach to get freedom. Alot of the daughters didnt start to speak up or fight back until the end...But in Hedda Gabler, Hedda started out fighting and claiming authority over what was hers. Also, I noticed that both protagonists (Hedda and Adela) felt so much pressure and control over their lives, that they saw death by their own hand as an only means of escape. What do u guys think?

Hedda: supsupsupsup!

Overall, I felt kinda bad for Hedda. She was very cruel and rude to alot of people in the play, but she only did it cuz she had to. I think alot of people who read the book kind of put Hedda in her own category of woman but to me she was just like the others. Hedda was subject to the same sexism and opression the other women went through. The only difference between Hedda and the other women is that she attempted to fight back..And so far she did a good job but I think she let the pressure get to her head and started to self destruct....Hedda felt strongest when she had control over others but she realized that if she wasnt in control, that someone had control over her and she didnt like that...Hedda could only see herself in control and the only way she saw that possibly happening was through death so she decided to take her own life..Its very sad but true..Some people are so afraid that others will take control of them that they see themselves in power through death ya kno?
